On Friday 12 July we said goodbye to our pal Dexter, he was a really gentle soul and we are honestly heartbroken. Dexter was nearly 17 and we have had him in our lives since he was a pup. He loved life on the canals, the different locations, the dogs and people we met along the way. We have so many happy memories of Dexter and he truly enriched our lives.
Dexter had mobility issues towards the end of his life and we were giving him monthly Liberal injections to help and we had some wonderful days with him, we even had him running down the towpath like a pup in March of this year. Five days before he left us we had a walk along the canal in Skipton, but that week his health declined quickly and he seemed very restless. We had an appointment with the vets on the Friday and he spent the day with Anthony and my parents, I had to go to work and it seemed that Dexter was nearing the end of his life. The vet confirmed that the kindest thing to do was put him to sleep and we were left with him to say our goodbyes, it was honestly the hardest thing we have ever done, but Dexter went to sleep very peacefully and we said our goodbyes.
The boat feels so lifeless without him and we are taking comfort from all the wonderful messages from around the World and it seems like our viewers loved Dexter as much as us. We are going to take some time to ourselves and have a couple of short breaks before we commit to another four legged friend. But we can’t imagine living on the boat without a dog.
As well as the lovely messages, cards and flowers we have received we were sent a beautiful gift made by viewers Tony & Bettina Brown.
My sister suggested we set up a just giving page in memory of Dexter, after all he was loved all over the World and we have nearly 22,000 subscribers, just imagine how much we could raise for a good cause. We have now set up a Just Giving page in Dexter’s memory and have chosen the Dogs Trust who help to re home dogs all over the Country.
